Hartnell remains an outright $2 favourite in 2017 Ranvet Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au despite drifting, ahead of The United States ($5), Stratum Star and Antonio Giuseppe; currently sharing the third line at $9 quotes.

Will Hartnell justify favouritism and return to winning form in the Ranvet Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

Our Ivanhowe ($11)

Our Ivanhowe has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing and should find his ideal competing conditions in the Ranvet Stakes, for the first time since arriving in Australia. The Soldier Hollow entire won the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on class alone in 2016 and performed admirably through the Spring Carnival, without finding much luck. Drawn well into the small Ranvet Stakes field in barrier 5, Our Ivanhowe will be partnered by in-form hoop Kerrin McEvoy and is more than worth consideration for a bet at his current odds.

Hartnell ($2)

Hartnell failed to fire at his most recent start, but his class suggests that he will be right in the finish of the Ranvet Stakes. Resuming in spring for second behind Winx in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m), the Authorized gelding won each of the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) by a combined seventeen lengths. Running second to Winx in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and third in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Hartnell ran on for second in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) first-up this time.

The United States ($5)

Winner of the Ranvet Stakes in 2016, The United States is sure to carry benefit into his title defence and is drawn well for a good run in transit in barrier 5. The Galileo entire resumed this time for a smart third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) and ran on well for fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last weekend, despite a tough run in transit. Ben Melham will take the ride on The United States, who should be right in the finish of the Ranvet Stakes at level weights.
