Waller Dominates 2016 Ranvet Stakes Nominations

March 14th, 2016

Ace Sydney trainer Chris Waller has nominated seven of his weight-for-age gallopers in the Ranvet Stakes 2016 this weekend as part of the bumper Golden Slipper Stakes Day card at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

Waller took out the $700,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) back in 2013 with Foreteller in an upset who was a 30/1 shot in betting and is back this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with a dominant hand.

The headline Ranvet Stakes entry for Waller is Zabeel four-year-old Preferment who won last Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) in a protest over Awesome Rock.

The stallion was second past the post by a short half-head but was awarded the win after stewards upheld the protest lodged by his jockey Hugh Bowman over the original winner, $21 roughie Awesome Rock.

Both horses now feature among the 19 Ravent Stakes nominations taken by Racing NSW on Monday for a possible rematch just seven days later, with the last galloper to complete the Australian Cup – Ranvet Stakes interstate double being Manighar (2012).

Among Waller’s other Ranvet Stakes entries are the likes of three-year-old Press Statement and seven-year-old Who Shot Thebarman.

Press Statement has won two previous Group 1 races against his own age, the Hinchinbrook colt narrowly missing out on a third when running second as the beaten favourite to Le Romain on March 5 in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

Both he and Le Romain are nominated for not just the Ranvet Stakes on Saturday but also the $1 million Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and the more likely target, the $600,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) for three-year-olds.

Who Shot Thebarman meanwhile is a veteran Kiwi expat who placed third in the 2014 Melbourne Cup and finished second in last year’s Sydney Cup over the two miles.

He was brave in defeat last Saturday in Rosehill’s Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) beaten only a length by Sir John Hawkwood and will only improve off that the more distance he gets this preparation.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig have two Ranvet Stakes hopefuls with $7.2 million earning superstar Criterion out to atone for his last when seventh to Holler first-up in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and the imported Dibayani who is yet to win down under.

Dibayani hasn’t won a race since 2013 but caught the eye when runner-up to Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) on February 27.

Also coming out of the Chipping Norton Stakes, which last produced a Ranvet Stakes winner last year when Contributer completed the double, is Hauraki for last year’s winning trainer John O’Shea.

A four-year-old son of Reset, Hauraki was third in the Chipping Norton Stakes last time out having also run third to Winx first-up in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m).

He was runner-up in last autumn’s Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m), but hasn’t won since March last year.

Other noteworthy Ranvet Stakes entries for 2016 include Bohemian Lily for seven-time winning trainer Gai Waterhouse and Mongolian Khan who took out last year’s Caulfield Cup in Melbourne.

The 2016 Ranvet Stakes final field of acceptances and barrier draw are released on Wednesday making now the time to sign-up with Ladbrokes.com.au to lock in your favourites with the country’s leading sportsbook.
