Pleasing over a short maiden Australian preparation through the 2014 spring, trainer John O’Shea has been pleased with the form and class displayed by talented British import Contributer in the lead-up to his racing return, and revealed the 2015 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) in March is likely to figure as the five-year-old’s first major target.
Claiming five race wins and a further three minor places over his short but impressive eleven start career so-far, Contributer began his racing tenure under the guidance of renowned British trainer Ed Dunlop before transferring to the Godolphin Australia stables in September last year.
Confirmed for a trial at Randwick Racecourse on Thursday morning, O’Shea told Racenet that while the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) initially registered as the High Chaparral entire’s main autumn target, the firm Flemington surface has instead lead to the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes in Sydney one week later as the first major point-of-call.
“I was thinking of going to Flemington for the Australian Cup but that track is too firm for him,” O’Shea said.
“I am more likely to keep him here, follow a traditional weight-for-age path, aiming towards the Group 1 Ranvet, one week before the BMW.”
Currently working as stable foreman for O’Shea, former champion jockey Darren Beadman has been thrilled with the condition of Contributer since his return to work and is brimming with confidence ahead of the 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival.
“He looks as good now as he did when he came over from England, when he won down in Melbourne. He looks really, really well,” Beadman said.
Securing several impressive results in his native England in 2014, Contributer returned to the track for an impressive two length victory in the Listed Magnolia Stakes (2011m) on March 29th; progressing to third in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes (2018m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Wolferton Handicap (2011m) on June 20th.
Charing home to win his Australian racing debut; the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) on Caulfield Cup Day, the stallion out of Serisia was unable to handle the late pace and firm Flemington ground when placing eighth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) most recently on November 8th.
