Returning to the track in 2014 in typically scintillation form, 2013 Melbourne Cup Champion Fiorente has opened and maintained as clear favourite for this weekend’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
The star of trainer Gai Waterhouse’s Randwick stables, Fiorente quickly built to the task at hand in 2013, claiming the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and finishing third behind Shamus Award and Happy Trails in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) before producing an incredible turn of foot to beat a spirited Red Cadeaux to the line in the race that stops a nation.
Looking well and truly out of contention in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up this year, the talented Monsun entire once again produced an incredible turn of foot to swallow up leader Mourayan on the line, before again sprinting well to comfortably win the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last time out.
Punters have responded to Fiorente’s second-to-none turn of foot in the final straight of any distance race, and have already shortened an opening price of $2.90 into current odds of $2.60; sure to shorten further before the Ranvet Stakes jumps on Saturday afternoon.
Securing four Group 1 titles in 2013 and becoming the only runner to defeat equine superstar Atlantic Jewel competitively, talented four-year-old It’s A Dundeel is currently featured on the second line of betting for the 2014 Ranvet Stakes, at a quote of $3.20.
Claiming resounding favouritism ahead of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) first-up on March 8th, It’s A Dundeel looked to have proven punters everywhere right when rounding in the clear, but was unable to withhold a late charge from talented miler Boban, finishing second.
Trainer Murray Baker did not expect such a strong effort from his stable’s leading performer first-up, instead underlining this weekend’s Ranvet Stakes as the major target.
Having drawn the ideal barrier 1, the proven High Chaparral entire has in fact secured more titles at the peak of Australian racing than Fiorente, and is more than capable of leaving Rosehill on Saturday with another 1st next to his name.
Currently featuring as the only other runner offered at odds of less-than $10 for Ranvet Stakes success, Foreteller produced a particularly consistent spring campaign and appears to have returned to the track in similarly competitive form, finishing third in the Australian Cup most recently.
While yet to receive much more than a sprinkling in Ranvet Stakes betting markets, trainer Chris Waller is confident the Dansili gelding will be in the mix in this dying stages of this weekend’s Group 1.
Yet to claim a victory since landing on Australian shores at the conclusion of 2012, Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House has received a noticeable number of wagers in the first 24 hours of Ranvet Stakes betting, cutting in from an opening price of $17 to currently feature at clear $11 market mover.
Back to his ideal distance of 2000m this weekend, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident the Street Cry filly will build off a solid run for second in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) last time out.
