Fiorente and It’s A Dundeel Confirmed for 2014 Ranvet Stakes Showdown

March 19th, 2014

While sharing the same Rosehill Gardens race card with featured Group 1 Coolmore Classic this Saturday, the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) is building as the most highly anticipated event of the day, as today’s final field and barrier draw has confirmed a showdown between talented stayers Fiorente and It’s A Dundeel.

Having finished second to Green Moon in the 2012 edition of the Melbourne Cup, Fiorente steadily built to the task at hand throughout the spring in 2013, winning the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and finishing a competitive third behind Shamus Award and Happy Trails in the Cox Plate (2040m) before producing an incredible final straight sprint to beat a spirited Red Cadeaux to the line in the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Appearing to be well and truly out of contention rounding the final bend in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up this preparation, the talented Monsun entire once again turned up the heat and swallowed up leaders Mourayan and Star Rolling to comfortably finish half a length in the clear, continuing his incredible run of form when claiming the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last time out.

With a view towards appearances in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) later in the Autumn carnival, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident Fiorente will again have no issue overcoming the talented Ranvet Stakes field after drawing the ideal barrier 4.

Claiming four Group 1 titles throughout 2013 and finishing an unlucky second in one more, talented four-year-old It’s A Dundeel was arguably most impressive when setting the pace and claiming Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 21st, at the same time becoming the only horse to defeat equine superstar Atlantic Jewel competitively.

Having claimed resounding favouritism for the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) first-up on March 8th, the classy High Chaparral entire looked to have secured another win at the top level of Australian racing before talented miler Boban swept through and found the line a length in the clear, leaving It’s A Dundeel to settle with a competitive second.

While expecting a strong showing in that campaign-opening event, trainer Murray Baker is confident It’s A Dundeel will be far-more polished for the Ranvet Stakes, and will pose a serious threat from the inside barrier.

Trainer Chris Waller is arguably offered the best chance of causing an upset in the 2014 Ranvet Stakes, having accepted positions in the final field for Foreteller, Hawkspur and Moriarty.

Claiming the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) ahead of talented import Puissance De Lune at the beginning of his spring preparation, Foreteller continued to build in form, finishing second in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) before closing his season a disappointing seventeenth in the race that stops a nation.

Having again built in form over three competitive starts this preparation, the Dansili gelding is more than capable of causing serious ripples in the Ranvet Stakes for barrier 4.

Featuring as a favourite amongst punters throughout the entire 2013 spring, Hawkspur (barrier 8) was unable to live up to the hype, despite claiming the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Returning in similar form when sixth (of six) in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up on February 8th, the Purrealist gelding appears to be building in form after finishing a strong third in the Chipping Norton two weeks ago.

Moriarty has been geared towards an appearance in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) this preparation, and while steadily building in form, will be faced with an uphill battle from the start of the Ranvet Stakes, having drawn the slightly wide barrier 7.

Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House (barrier 2) has also been confirmed for the 2014 Ranvet Stakes, and will be joined at the start by Sertorius (barrier 6), Silent Achiever (barrier 9) and Gondokoro (barrier 3).
