A particularly talented field of 13 runners have nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens, including several previous winners at the top level of Australian Racing.
Fresh off the back of success in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8th, talented six-year-old Fiorente will be aiming to secure a fourth-straight race win in the Ranvet Stakes this weekend.
Steadily building to the task at hand over a memorable 2013 spring preparation which included a win in the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and competitive third behind Shamus Award and Happy Trails in the Cox Plate (2040m), Fiorente produced an incredible final straight sprint to beat Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos to the line in the major Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 5th.
Appearing well and truly out of contention in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up on February 22nd, the classy Monsun entire produced another incredible turn of foot to easily overcome the race’s frontrunners and finish a nose in the clear of Mourayan and Star Rolling.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse holds her stable’s star in understandably high regard, and is expecting another polished performance and third-consecutive Group 1 title this weekend.
Waterhouse has also nominated Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House for the 2014 Ranvet Stakes, following a competitive second in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) last time out.
Having performed well in his native Great Britain before being transferred to the care of Waterhouse and the end of 2012, the six-year-old Street Cry entire has so-far been unable to cause much of an impact in any event in Australia, but appears to be finally turning in form.
Classy four-year-old It’s A Dundeel has claimed four Group 1 titles in only 16 race starts so far, and has yet again returned to the track in 2014 in good condition.
Despite carrying clear favouritism into the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) first-up on March 8, the exciting High Chaparral stallion was unable to sustain a late charge from talented miler Boban, finishing one length behind in second.
Featuring as the only runner to beat equine superstar Atlantic Jewel in a competitive race, trainer Murray Baker believes It’s A Dundeel will be far more convincing following the still strong first-up result and is confident of a fifth Group 1 title this weekend.
Trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 Ranvet Stakes, having nominated Brigantin, Foreteller, Hawkspur and Moriarty.
Having secured six wins and twelve places from 31 race starts so far, Brigantin has returned to the track in competitive form over his current preparation, following up a fifth in the December Handicap (1550m) first-up with an unlucky second behind Midsummer Rain in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) and third in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) most recently.
Foreteller has also returned to the track in strong form this preparation, finishing fourth in a well-run Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up, fifth in the Peter Young Stakes and third in the Australian Cup most recently.
Whilst billed as ‘one to watch’ over the spring of 2013, Hawkspur was unable to live up to the hype that followed him from event to event, eventually closing his disappointing campaign 20th in the Melbourne Cup.
Having finished third in the Chipping Norton most recently, Waller is hoping the Purrealist gelding will finally be able to string together a consistent list of results throughout his autumn campaign.
Irish import Moriarty has been geared towards an appearance in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) this preparation, and is starting to find particularly consistent form at a high level, finishing fourth in the Chipping Norton most recently.
The final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Ranvet Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
